How long do you have to return something to Marshalls?
You have 40 days to return an online order, counted from the order date, and 30 days to return an in-store purchase, counted from the date of purchase. Returns made inside those periods are credited to the original form of payment. Miss them and the fallback is merchandise credit rather than a refund to your card. The window can also be shorter for specific items: check the item details in your shipping confirmation email or on the product page before you buy, since some merchandise is final sale or carries its own restrictions.
“Online orders: within 40 days of order date”
Does Marshalls count the return window from purchase or delivery?
It depends on where you bought the item. For marshalls.com orders the clock starts at the order date, not the delivery date, so a slow shipment eats into your window. For purchases made in a Marshalls store the clock starts at the date of purchase on your register receipt. Because the online window runs from ordering, an order that took a week to arrive has roughly a week less time than shoppers assume, and the shipping confirmation email is the document that proves your deadline.
“In-store purchases: within 30 days of purchase”
Can you return to Marshalls without a receipt?
Yes, but you get merchandise credit only, never a refund to your payment method. You must provide a valid government-issued photo ID, your name, address, and a signature, and the name printed on the merchandise credit must match the name on the photo ID or the credit may not be used. The same ID-and-signature rule applies to online orders returned in store without the shipping confirmation email. Expect the credit to be issued at the store rather than any reversal on your card.
“A valid government issued photo ID, name, address, and signature are required for non-receipted returns”
What happens if you return to Marshalls after 40 days?
For online orders, a return that arrives at the warehouse more than 40 days after the order date receives merchandise credit instead of a refund. In store, returns with a receipt past 30 days, and returns with a gift receipt or no receipt at any point, also receive merchandise credit only. So a late return is not refused outright, but the money comes back as store spending power rather than cash or a card credit, and merchandise credits carry their own terms and transfer restrictions.
“Returns that arrive at the warehouse more than 40 days after the original order date will receive merchandise credit.”
Can you return worn, washed or opened items to Marshalls?
Marshalls takes back most unwashed, unused, and appropriately tagged merchandise. Merchandise that is used, worn, or in unsellable condition is refused for refund, merchandise credit, and exchange alike. Swimwear and intimate apparel must have their tickets properly attached, and beauty items that have been opened or tampered with cannot be returned at all. Practically, keep the tags on and the original plastic packaging until you are sure you are keeping the item, since packaging helps in-store returns go faster.
“We will gladly take back most unwashed, unused, and appropriately tagged merchandise as outlined in our return policy.”
How do you start a return at Marshalls?
For an in-store return of an online order, bring the item, your shipping confirmation email printed or on your phone, or the barcode or order number from your online order details, plus the plastic packaging the item arrived in. Your signature is required at the store. For a mail return, start from the online returns portal linked on the Returns page, choose a carrier, and either print the label or generate a QR code for a printerless return. Have the packing slip and plastic packaging ready, and consolidate everything into one shipment to avoid paying the mail fee more than once.
“please provide your Shipping Confirmation email (printed or on mobile device) and the plastic packaging your items arrived in.”
Can you return a Marshalls online order in a store?
Yes, and it is free. An online purchase can go back to any Marshalls store within 40 days of the order date, or to the Marshalls online warehouse, and those are the only two destinations. Marshalls will not accept marshalls.com returns at T.J. Maxx or its other sister brands, and merchandise bought in a store cannot be returned online at all. Bringing the shipping confirmation email as your receipt speeds things up. High-value exceptions exist: items over $1,000, designer-priced handbags and footwear, long occasion gowns, and luggage sets are not eligible for in-store return and must go by mail.
“Please note that items purchased at marshalls.com can only be returned to a Marshalls store or to the Marshalls online warehouse, in accordance with this return policy. Items purchased at marshalls.com may not be returned to T.J. Maxx or any of our other sister brands.”
How do Marshalls mail returns work, and who pays?
Start at the online returns portal, select a carrier, and either print the label or use a QR code for a printerless drop-off. The package must arrive at the warehouse within 40 days of the order date. A return shipping and handling fee of $11.99 is deducted from your refund or store credit, and the fee applies per return package, so combining items into one shipment saves money. PayPal orders returned by mail receive charge credit minus the same fee. Oversized items may be blocked from the portal entirely, in which case you must contact TJX Customer Service to start the mail return.
“A return shipping and handling fee of $11.99 will be deducted from your refund or store credit.”
How do exchanges work at Marshalls?
For online orders, they do not: Marshalls states that exchanges are not available for online purchases, so your only options are a refund or merchandise credit path. If you want a different size or color, the practical route is a return, then place a new order. In-store purchases are different: you can exchange merchandise within 30 days of purchase when you bring a register receipt, with the refund or exchange issued in the original form of tender. Off-price inventory turns over quickly, which is why Marshalls declines to promise online swaps.
“Due to our ever-changing inventory, exchanges are not available for online orders.”
How long does a Marshalls refund take, and how is it paid?
Mail returns credit your account within 10 to 14 business days after the warehouse receives your qualifying return, though the exact posting depends on your bank and billing cycle. In-store returns are refunded to the original form of payment or merchandise credit on the spot, with the bank sometimes taking a few days to show it. Returns with a receipt inside the window go back to the original payment method; gift-receipted, receiptless, and late returns get merchandise credit instead. The $11.99 mail fee comes out of whatever refund you receive.
“For returns by mail, your account will be credited within 10 to 14 business days after we've received your qualifying Marshalls.com return, in most cases, depending on your bank and/or billing cycle.”
Does Marshalls refund the original shipping charge?
No. Shipping and handling costs and any oversized-item surcharges are non-refundable, so you do not get the original delivery charge back when you return. The return shipping and handling fee is also non-refundable, with one exception: if the merchandise is defective, the return fee is refunded along with the item. For a full-value outcome, that makes the free in-store return the better route for online orders, since neither the original shipping nor the return fee comes back on a mail return unless the item itself was defective.
“Return shipping and handling fees are non-refundable, unless the merchandise is defective.”
What can't you return to Marshalls?
Gift cards are not eligible for returns, period. Beauty items that have been opened or tampered with cannot be returned, and merchandise that is used, worn, or in unsellable condition is refused for refund, credit, or exchange. Items flagged as final sale in the item details of your shipping confirmation email are excluded too. On the store side, anything over $1,000 cannot be returned to a store, and handbags, footwear, long occasion gowns, and luggage sets are likewise ineligible for in-store return of an online purchase. Those high-value items must go back by mail instead.
“Items over $1,000 are not eligible for in store return”
How do gift returns work at Marshalls?
A return made with a gift receipt receives merchandise credit rather than a refund to the buyer's payment method, so the recipient gets spending power at Marshalls without involving the purchaser's card. Online gift returns have their own entry point: the Returns overview page links a 'Returning a Gift? Start Your Return Here' flow into the returns portal. Bring the printed gift receipt packing slip if you have it. Note that merchandise credits carry terms printed on them, including possible transfer restrictions, so the person named on the credit is the person who can use it.
“With a gift receipt (printed packing slip) will receive merchandise credit.”
Does Marshalls track or limit returns?
Yes. Marshalls says returns may be limited or declined based on its refund verification systems, which process and track returns as part of its loss prevention program. For non-receipted returns you must show a valid government-issued photo ID and sign, and that identity information feeds the verification process. Certain items carry an additional security tag that must remain attached and intact for the return to be accepted. If your return is declined, the system rather than the store manager is the stated reason, and the merchandise credit tied to your ID follows the terms printed on it.
“Returns may also be limited or declined based upon our refund verification systems, which are used to process and track returns to help administer our loss prevention program.”
How do you reach Marshalls about a return?
Return help runs through TJX Customer Service, not an individual store. The listed contact for return issues, especially oversized items that the online return portal will not accept, is phone 1-833-888-0776 or email ecommercecustomerservice@tjx.com. Use that channel when the portal blocks your item or when you need a mail return set up manually. For ordinary returns, the online returns portal and any store register handle the process without needing to contact anyone.
“please contact TJX Customer Service by phone at 1-833-888-0776, or by email at ecommercecustomerservice@tjx.com”
